Ochlockonee River offers perfect examples of the scenic
natural characteristics founds along north Florida's Gulf coast. Visitors have an
excellent opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities offered by land as well as by water in
this 392-acre park.
Because the park is nestled in scenic pine flatwoods, it is the perfect area for nature
studies. Small grass ponds, bayheads and oak thickets provide a diversity of biological
communities especially suitable for wildlife. Animals such as deer, fox squirrel, bobcat, gray fox and numerous species of birds are
commonly observed. Of special interest is the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, unusual
in that it makes its next cavities in living, mature pine trees.
The Ochlockonee offers visitors an ideal setting for a picnic with
a view. A boat ramp provides access to the river, Ochlockonee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
The park is considered an excellent location for both canoeing and fishing.
Both fresh and saltwater species may be caught, including largemouth bass, bream, catfish
and speckled perch in the fresh waters. Redfish and speckled trout are common in the
brackish water. A Florida freshwater fishing license is required for all persons 16 years
of age or older. A saltwater fishing license is required for the taking of saltwater
species.
Family camping and separate youth camping facilities are
provided, as are swimming and picnic areas.
Nature trails are located along the river and throughout the pine forest. During summer
months, ranger-guided walks and campfire programs are provided.
Ochlockonee River State Park is located four miles south of Sopchoppy on U.S. 319.
Pets are not allowed in camping areas, on bathing beaches, in concession areas and may be
restricted in other designated areas of the park. Where pets are allowed, they must be
kept on a six-foot, hand-held leash and well-behaved at all times. Service dogs are
welcome in all areas of the parks. For more information contact:
